"The Mac is back!" Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said.

EARNINGS: What companies are reporting today? The quarter was led by record-setting sales of Macintosh laptops and desktops "despite having to go up against the Windows 7 launch," said Van Baker, an analyst at Gartner. Windows 7 is the new computer operating system upgrade released last fall by longtime Apple rival Microsoft.

Apple's trendiest product, the iPhone, saw sales increase 100%, but tech analysts weren't impressed. "We expected more," Baker said.

Apple (AAPL) in November began selling the iPhone in China —#x a huge potential market — but the launch "wasn't as good as Apple had hoped it would be," Baker said.

Overall, Apple sold 3.36 million Mac computers, up 33% from the year before, and 8.7 million iPhones. As with the previous quarter, iPod sales continued to decline. Apple sold 21 million iPods, but unitRay Bansunglassessales were down 8%.

Still, sales of the iPod Touch — which is basically the iPhone without the phone — rose 55%, enough to bring revenue growth for the iPod line up 1%. The iPod Touch starts at $199, while the best-selling iPod — the Nano — starts at $149.

Apple announced revenue of $15.7 billion for the holiday quarter, and earnings of $3.4 billion. The year-ago quarter saw $11.9 billion in revenue and $2.3 billion in earnings.

This week in San Francisco, all eyes are on Apple's Wednesday press event to unveil a talked-about tablet computer — a multimedia, touch-screen wireless device to watch movies and TV shows, listen to music, read books and monitor e-mail.

"The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about," Jobs said in a statement about the quarter.

Behind the scenes, Apple's revenue numbers are higher than previous quarters in part because of an accounting change.

Before, Apple employed subscription accounting, which broke out salesRay Ban sunglassesof the iPhone and Apple TV over a 24-month period. Now,Energy saving lamps, most of the sales are reflected at the time of sale, with $25 deferred. Munster said Apple was reporting sales of $78 per iPhone per quarter. With the new accounting, it is $595 per quarter.

Apple's stock rose $5.32 in regular trading, #x and another $2.63 in after-hours trading to $205.70.
